A Year of Royal Excellence: Asefa Firew’s Transformative Reign at Kampala Queens FC

When Ethiopian tactician Asefa Firew Hailegebreal walked into the Kampala Queens FC palace on 4th November 2024, he came with calm confidence and a clear promise — to bring growth, teamwork, and glory. One year later, those words have become reality. The Queens have not only reclaimed their dominance but also rediscovered their true royal identity under his leadership.

The appointment of Asefa marked a new chapter in Ugandan women’s football. He became the first international coach to lead a club in the FUFA Women Super League, a sign of the growing ambition and professionalism in the women’s game. Many saw it as a bold move — but it has proven to be a masterstroke.

In his first twelve months in charge, Asefa has presided over 30 matches across all competitions, delivering an impressive record of 19 wins and 6 draws, falling only 5 times to his opponents. His side lifted the Finance Trust Bank FUFA Women Super League trophy, reached the FUFA Women’s Cup semifinals, and put on a spirited show at the CAF Women’s Champions League CECAFA Zonal Qualifiers where his charges fell at the semifinal stage – the highest level at the competition so far.

The team’s football has evolved into a fluid, possession-based, and attack-minded brand — one that mirrors Asefa’s personality: composed, calculated, and confident. The Queens have learned not only how to win but how to control and enjoy the game.

What makes Asefa’s success story remarkable is not only the trophies or statistics, but the transformation within the team. He inherited a talented squad, yet one in need of new direction, belief, and tactical balance. Through detailed training, mentorship, and open communication, Asefa has built a group that plays for each other — a hallmark of true champions.

His tactical flexibility has allowed every player to shine. From the leadership of Captain Shakirah Nankwanga, to the energy of Joanitah Ainembabazi, and the calm between the posts of Gloria “Zaza” Namakula and Sharon Kaidu, Asefa’s fingerprints are visible throughout the lineup. But perhaps the most compelling story of his reign is that of Kamiyati Naigaga.

When Asefa arrived, Kamiyati was more of an impact substitute — a promising player with pace, flair, and determination. But under Asefa’s guidance, she has grown into one of Kampala Queens’ most trusted front-line players and the heartbeat of the attack.

The coach’s decision to entrust her with more responsibility has paid off. Kamiyati’s maturity, confidence, and end product have soared. Her five goals in four matches in October earned her the Finance Trust Bank Player of the Month award — a clear reflection of her progress.

She has delivered in crucial moments — including a dramatic late winner against Makerere University and a brace against Rines SS WFC — showing the killer instinct Asefa has worked to polish. Her words after receiving the award reflect the culture Asefa has built:

“This was team effort. I want to keep working harder for the team and for myself.”

Those values — humility, teamwork, and continuous improvement — define the new Kampala Queens philosophy.

Asefa’s reign hasn’t been without challenges. Injuries, fixture congestion, and the pressure to maintain the club’s high standards have all tested his resolve. Yet through it all, his calm approach and clear communication have steadied the palace. Players describe him as a “teacher” — patient, tactical, and deeply committed to individual and team growth.

His one-year milestone comes at a time when Kampala Queens are once again seen as the standard of women’s football in Uganda. The league crown, a strengthened squad, and a solid identity on and off the pitch are all evidence of his impact.

The Queens look ahead to new horizons — including defending the crown and aiming for continental success — Asefa’s vision remains unchanged: to keep building a team that plays beautiful football, inspires young girls, and brings more glory to Uganda like he always notes that “This is the best team in Africa.”

Asefa will dive into his second year at the palace with a busy month of November filled with decider fixtures. The royal reign continues to another year that promises even more and better history.
