The Woman Behind the Queen – Marrion Amangat Speaks

As we celebrate International Women’s Day, we shine the spotlight on one of the pillars of our defense — the commanding and resilient center-back, Marrion Amangat. In a sit-down interview with the club, the towering defender shared key insights into both her personal life and her football journey.

Born and raised in Katakwi district, in Angopet, Amangat’s football journey began at a very young age. Her love for the game first blossomed while she was in Primary Five at Katakwi Primary School. Like many young talents, her early days were filled with raw passion, playing the game simply because it brought her joy.

Her breakthrough moment arrived in 2013 during the HopeChest Tournament hosted at Katakwi High School. It was there that her natural defensive instincts caught the attention of teacher Mr. Otim. Recognizing her potential, he connected her to Olila High School Women Football Club her mother club — a step that would become the foundation of a remarkable football journey.

From that moment on, Amangat grew into one of the most reliable defenders in Ugandan women’s football. When the FUFA Women Elite League was established in 2015, she was already an integral part of her mother club and quickly rose to become the team captain. Over the years, she led the side with distinction and consistency, becoming their longest-serving captain and one of the most respected figures in the team’s history – 10 years she counted.

One of her standout achievements at the club came in 2017 when she helped them lift the inaugural FUFA Women’s Cup trophy — a historic moment for both the club and the competition.

Amangat’s loyalty and commitment became a defining part of her career. She remained with the club for more than a decade, from 2013 until 2025, making her one of the longest-serving players to stay with a single team in Ugandan women’s football.

In August 2025, a new chapter began when she joined the reigning champions, Kampala Queens FC, as the club prepared for the CAF Women’s Champions League CECAFA Qualifiers in Kenya.

Despite being a new addition to the squad, Amangat immediately established herself as a dependable presence at the back. During the CECAFA qualifiers, she featured in four matches and started every single one of them — a clear sign of the trust placed in her by the technical team. Her performances helped the Queens reach the semifinals of the tournament.

Back in domestic competition, Amangat has continued to play a crucial role in the Palace in the Finance Trust Bank FUFA Women’s Super League. In the ongoing season, she has started 12 of the club’s 14 matches so far. The only two games she missed came during a period when she had traveled home to take care of her hospitalized mother — a reminder that behind the warrior on the pitch is a daughter devoted to her family.

Although she is primarily a defender, Amangat has also shown her ability to contribute going forward. So far, she has written her name on the scoresheet twice this season — against She Corporate FC and Asubo Ladies FC, both matches played at MTN Omondi Stadium, Lugogo.

“I was very excited because it meant I had opened my scoring account. My main aim is always to help the team, and if I can contribute by putting the ball in the back of the net, even as a defender, it makes me very happy,” she said when asked about that moment when she recorded her first goal in the Queens’ colors.

Away from football, Amangat is equally committed to building her professional life. She is a records officer and holds a certificate in Records and Information Management, balancing her career with her responsibilities as a professional athlete.

When asked about her biggest source of motivation, Amangat does not hesitate to credit her family.

“The woman who motivates me the most to play football is my mother,” she said. “I will also include my brothers, even though they are not women, because they have put much trust and hope in me to help change life at home.”

Football, she says, has shaped her character and outlook on life.

“The game has taught me that for someone to achieve their goals, discipline must come first, followed by respect and other values. Football has also made me known by many people in the country.”

To young girls who dream of following in her footsteps, Amangat offers a powerful message:

“My message to the young girls out there is that in life, for you to achieve what you want, you must have self-respect and your own opinions before the community around you can complement, support or judge you.”
